Ever tried açaí berries? It’s funny how one day a particular food will become popular overnight! In case you’ve never heard, these berries grow on an Açaí palm tree. They pretty much look like blueberries and are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants = heart healthy!
What I want to know is how am I only just now learning about açaí bowls? These things are fantastic! I ate one for breakfast a couple weeks ago when my lovely husband picked it up from a local deli. It’s like eating a fruit smoothie in a bowl and topped with granola and fresh fruit! Yum!
Of course you could always mix up your own toppings and favorite fruit combination, but I used blueberries, bananas, strawberries and raspberries. So where do you get the açaí berries? You can find them in the freezer section of the grocery store, and most likely in the organic/health food area. This product is great because you really want frozen fruit in order to achieve the smoothie like consistency of the blended fruit.
- 4 oz. package frozen açaí berries
- 1/2 cup frozen fruit (strawberries and banana - or your favorite combination)
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1/2 cup granola
- fresh fruit, cut up
- 1 spoonful shredded coconut
- 1/2 teaspoon honey
- Blend up frozen fruit and milk in a blender until smoothie like consistency is achieved.
- Pour mixture into a bowl and top with granola, fresh fruit and shredded coconut.
- Drizzle with honey if desired.
- Slowly add milk to frozen fruit mixture when blending. You don't want to thin the mix out too much and you may not need a full 1/2 serving.
All I can say is that I will definitely be consuming many more açaí bowls for breakfast in the near future :)
